美國大學服裝設計專業(yè)學以培養(yǎng)學生人文素質與表達服裝設計創(chuàng)作之專業(yè)技術與能力為教育目標，透過作品競賽、展演等創(chuàng)作驗證發(fā)展個人特質與設計創(chuàng)作力，同時為服飾產業(yè)人才需求以及擴展學生就業(yè)空間，分別規(guī)劃設計、經營企劃、生產管理、織品設計等專業(yè)輔助選修課程，為服飾產業(yè)培育全方位之專業(yè)人才。
    目前中國的服裝行業(yè)里，專門從事服裝行業(yè)的人不在少數(shù)，但是懂服裝行業(yè)的人卻很少，普遍缺乏高素質的專業(yè)人才，是中國服裝行業(yè)的一個顯著特點，同時也反映出了在這方面的專業(yè)教育資源的短缺。
    隨著留學熱潮的到來，也有越來越多的藝術類學生涌向海外。我們知道，歐洲及美國等發(fā)達國家的專業(yè)教育已經經歷了上百年的歷史，無論是服裝設計、營銷還是視覺藝術等方面，都經歷了多年的市場考驗，并且針對企業(yè)的實際需求延伸出了許多應用性很強的邊緣學科，比如商品企劃，采購學等，這些專業(yè)教育也的確為企業(yè)提供了更多可應用型的專業(yè)人才。但在國內，在這方面國內卻相對比較薄弱。

    四、設置服裝設計專業(yè)的學校
    在申請方面，美國大學服裝設計專業(yè)除了托福成績之外(僅小部分學校接受雅思成績)，申請服裝設計專業(yè)本科需要參加SAT考試，Mater Degree的話，如果是偏設計方面的專業(yè)，一般不需要GRE成績，但也有少部分學校有要求。
