The UK now is proud to possess six of the world’s top 20 universities, according to a new global table.
Edinburgh and King’s College London have stepped into the top 20 of the QS World University rankings. Cambridge, UCL, Imperial and Oxford all made it into the top10. But John O’ Leary, of QS, warned that unless the UK puts more funding into higher education its leading position could slip.
Edinburgh rose to 17th place from 21st last year and King’s College London to 19th from 26th in 2012.
The top UK university, Cambridge, was in third position, behind Massachusetts Institute of Technology at the top of the table and Harvard in second.
University College London(UCL) and Imperial occupied fourth and fifth places, with Oxford in sixth.
Universities in the United States made up the rest of the top 10.
“Clearly a UK degree is recognized by employers around the world, and the brand-name value of Oxbridge has so far survived any negative publicity following the high tuition fee,” said Ben Sowter, head of research at QS.
However, the rankings also suggest that UK universities struggle to keep up with the US when it comes to cutting-edge research.
Of UK universities, only Cambridge made the top 30 for research citations(引用), with UCL, Oxford and Imperial in the top 50.
“The UK invests below the OECD average in higher education, so it is unrealistic to expect its universities to continue to punch above their weight(勉為其難),” said John O’Leary, of the QS global academic advisory board. “The current success of leading institutions shows how important it is that the government matches the investments being made by other countries in order to keep their world-class status.”
            56. According to the passage, which of the following universities tops the first in the world?
            A. Oxford University.  B. Cambridge University.
            C. Edinburgh University.  D. Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
            57. The passage implies that________.

            B. the high education in UK is very successful
            C. it’s important to receive education in the UK
            D. the government of the UK should spend more money on education
            58. The writer’s attitude towards the present situation of education is________.
            A. objective B. negative C. subjective D. optimistic
            59. Which of the following is TRUE?
            A. Cambridge tops the first in the world.
            B. A UK degree is still recognized around the world.
            C. Edinburgh has stepped into the top 10 universities in the world.
            D. The UK invests above the OECD average in high education.
            B
In the 12 years I’ve spent coaching others, I’ve recognized patterns that hold us back from success. Here I share some of the most powerful lessons I’ve learned along the way.
            1. You compare yourself with others
Whether it’s starting a business or learning a new skill, you will look at others who are much further down the road from you and expect your results to be similar to theirs, today. Since you cannot see the struggle, the mistakes and the hundreds of little improvements they made every single day, you suppose these never existed. By comparison you feel incapable and discouraged.
Shift your focus instead to where you are today compared to yesterday to get a more accurate picture of the progress you’re making.
            2. ___________________.
You want those you care about to approve. You create a story that their approval means you’re on the right path. You don’t want to disappoint. And so you end up stuck by a rough comment, or an unenthusiastic reaction. I’ll never forget my uncle giving me a pained look while telling me, “Why are you still in London? Come back to Malta with your family.” Ouch that really hurt, but had I listened, I’d be stuck in a dead-end job, living a life that was killing my soul.
            3. You wait for the “right” time.
You keep putting something off because it’s not the “right” time yet. You need to make a few more improvements, get more experience, learn a few more skills. You wait for the economy to improve, the weather to get better or for a sign that you should start. The right time is now. Only by starting will you discover what else needs to be done or improved, never before.
            4. You suppose talent rather than persistence is the secret to success.
“If I had any talent, this would be much easier. I’m not cut out for this.” When you start your project, you discover it’s a steep uphill struggle to get where you want. You make it mean you’re lacking in some way, that maybe you should aim a little lower or try something easier. Don’t bury into this mindset. Anything you do will get easier the more you do it. So keep working at it and eventually you’ll find yourself at the top of that hill.
            60. The first paragraph of the passage serves as ______.
            A. an introduction to the topic B. an example to support the topic
            C. a warning to readers  D. a description of a personal story
            61. In the eyes of the writer, you are unsuccessful for the reason that ______.
            A. you focus on where you are today B. you stress how a success makes it
            C. you feel desperate by comparison D. you fail to compare with others
            62. Which of the following can be filled in the blank of the passage?
            A. You deserve respect and love. B. You are not flexible.
            C. You wait for others’ approval. D. You expect instant results.
            63. According to the last two lessons, the secret to success is ______.
            A. sticking to what you have started till you succeed
            B. waiting for the economy to turn for the better
            C. aiming a little lower due to the lack of a talent
            D. getting started when you are better improved
            C

It opened on February 20, 1872, and was originally located at 681 Fifth Avenue.

Get rid of your addictions while you sleep? Weizmann Institute researcher Dr. Arzi is not promising this yet, but she and Prof. Sobel have shown that changing bad habits through sleep conditioning could someday be possible. After just one session in the Neurobiology(神經(jīng)生物學(xué)) Department’s sleep lab, volunteers reported smoking on average 30% fewer cigarettes over the course of a week. Volunteers given the same conditioning while awake did not reduce their nicotine(尼古丁) consumption.
Arzi and Sobel had first presented true sleep learning in 2012. This is the same conditioning that Pavlov, a Russian physiologist who is best known for discovering the conditioned response, discovered when he trained dogs to salivate(過(guò)量分泌唾液) at the sound of a bell: Teach the mind to subconsciously associate one sense with another. Their twist was to use smell instead of the bell: We can register and even react to smells while we sleep without waking up. So when the volunteers were exposed throughout the night to the smell of cigarette smoke together with that of rotten fish, they did not remember it in the morning. And yet their need for a “ciggy” was not as strong as it had been.
The second trick was to monitor the sleepers’ brain waves and give the smells at the right stage of sleep. The group’s previous research had suggested that the associations are formed and firmed in the brain during non-rapid-eye-movement(NREM) sleep — the stage in which researchers believe that memories from the previous day are being strengthened. The new study supported this finding quite strongly.
Arzi points out that the research has proven a point about the workings of the sleeping brain. She will be pleased, of course, if clinical researchers adopt the method and improve on it.
            68. According to the passage, volunteers smoked 30% fewer cigarettes probably because ______.
            A. Arzi and Sobel tried to prevent them from smoking too much

            B. We can respond to smells while we sleep without waking up.
            C. Pavlov trained dogs to ring bells and recognize cigarette smells.
            D. Memories from the previous day will get lost during NREM sleep.

Mark Zuckerberg is the 30-year-old billionaire responsible for the creation of Facebook.
Mark was born on May 14, 1984, in White Plains, New York. Mark developed an interest in computers at an early age. He began teaching himself how to code before the sixth grade. After creating small games for his own amusement, Mark moved on to far more complex efforts, including the popular board game “Risk.” Zuckerberg’s technical talent only increased as he entered high school, and it was his work on a plug-in for the Winamp MP3 player that eventually caught the interest of AOL and Microsoft.
Rather than become just another nobody in the corporate machine, Mark chose to create his own path by furthering his education at Harvard University. His first venture into the online world was a primitive website entitled Facemash, which essentially allowed his fellow students to compare their looks with those of the site’s visitors. Not surprisingly, Harvard was less than thrilled with the site’s practice, and quickly shut down both the site and Mark’s internet connection.
Shortly after the Facemash incident, Mark began working on a new site that would contact Harvard students via an online website. Entitled the Facebook, the site launched from his dorm room on February 15, 2004. The increasing popularity of the site convinced Mark and his roommate, Dustin, to expand the site to other schools, including Yale, Columbia and Stanford.
Later that year, Mark opened the Facebook up to schools across US and Canada. Great numbers of investors allowed Mark to change the name from The Facebook to just Facebook.
In September 2005, Mark launched a high school version of Facebook. Though he had plenty of opportunities to sell the site for ridiculous sums of money, Mark has bucked all industry expectations and insisted that Facebook is better off on its own. As he has said, “As a company we're very focused on what we’re building and not as focused on the exit. We just believe that we’re adding a certain amount of value to people’s lives if we build a very good product.” It’s consequently not surprising to note that Forbes once called Mark “the youngest billionaire on earth, and possibly the youngest self-made billionaire ever.”
            72. What caused AOL and Microsoft to show interest in Mark?
            A. His work on a plug-in for a MP3 player. B. The popular board game “Risk”.
            C. A primitive website entitled Facemash. D. Some small self-entertainment games.
            73. It can be learned from the third paragraph that Facemash ______.
            A. cut off Mark’s internet connection
            B. was essentially accepted by Harvard
            C. was Mark’s first risky entry into the online world
            D. was shut down because Harvard couldn’t make money out of it
            74. Which of the following order best describes the shaping of Facebook?
            a. The site entitled the Facebook launched from his dorm room.
            b. Mark began working on a new site contacting Harvard students.
            c. Mark opened the Facebook up to schools across the US and Canada.
            d. Mark launched a high school version of Facebook.
            e. Mark decided to change the Facebook to Facebook.
            A. a-e-c-b-d B. a-c-b-d-e C. b-a-c-d-e D. b-a-c-e-d
            75. What would be the best title for the passage?
            A. The Popularity of Facebook B. A Born Computer Talent
            C. Mark — A Self-made Billionaire D. The Value of Facebook

            Version 1
The fun game implies that success calls for such factors as luck, knowledge and hard work, especially attitude. In my opinion, it is attitude that determines everything although knowledge is power and hard work can bring us harvest.
As is often the case, our attitude determines how we feel and what will become of our knowledge and hard work. For example, a positive attitude is certain to help us achieve our goals, but whether we feel optimistic or not lies in what attitudes we choose. Keeping positive can give us hope and improve our working efficiency, while being pessimistic only makes us feel desperate or even give up at last.
In short, we should keep a good attitude towards anything. After all, a good attitude is bound to make life brighter. There is no doubt that no one could succeed without a good attitude.  (126 words)
            Version 2:

I still remember how hard it was for me when I began to learn English approximately six years ago. The more time I spent on it, the more disgusted I was with it. However hard I tried, I still couldn’t do well in it. Fortunately, my English teacher helped me change my attitude towards English before I gave it up. Apparently, it’s attitude rather than other factors that determines my English study.
In short, we should keep a good attitude towards anything. After all, a good attitude is bound to make life brighter. There is no doubt that no one could succeed without a good attitude. (126 words)

W: The sound of shaking WeChat. I guess you’re playing. Is there any fun?
M: Exactly! U use the WeChat mainly for a group messaging and sharing photos, the beauty of this is that I do not have to have a laptop and PC around. It’s convenient.
            Text3
M: I don’t care what it takes. I want Robinson on my team next year.
W: He’ll be a free agent. I don’t know if we can make him an attractive enough deal.

M: Every time I call Grandpa’s phone, I get no answer. Uh, he told me he was gonna nap most of the week.
            W: Oh! Oh, good.
M: Well, he needs his sleep. But he never wakes up.

M: A table saw? We’re doing some simple repairs, not building our house. Other women want clothes and jewellery, and you want tools?
W: That’s right. You should be counting your lucky stars!

W: Wow, it’s fantastic. I’m like a princess living in fairytale.
M: Of course, Miss. It’s a newly opened fairytale themed restaurant.
W: Excuse me, would you mind if I ask you a question?
            M: No, Miss.
W: Are you of age yet? You know you give an appearance of a middle-school boy.
M: Err…I’m over 18 years old, Miss. Our restaurant requires waiters are adults with a height of around 1.3 metres.

W: Oh, this it! This is the perfect location for our new store!
M: Sorry, but this space isn’t zoned for retail. It’s zoned for offices.
W: But couldn’t we get the zoning commission to re-zone it?
M: That’s not an easy process. The city’s urban planners decided that this space would be best suited for offices. Changing their minds won’t be easy.
W: I’ve heard that a lot of new developments are being zoned for mixed use. That’s all we need to do. We just need this building to be re-zoned for mixed use. Then, we can use the space downstairs for commercial purposes and use the upstairs space for offices or even housing.

M: China’s other surfer girl is Monica Guo, a Guilin native who now lives and surfs in Hainan. Guo is a self-described sport girl. Growing up she always loved running, basketball, bicycle, rock climbing and then she found surfing. Here comes Monica Guo. Welcome!
            W: Thank you.
M: How did you get into surfing?
W: I started surfing in 2008, but I was aware of the sport since I was in high school. My friend from Australia said, “ hey I can teach you how to surf!”. So we went to Langtao island in Hong Kong. The waves there are so good for learning, so smooth. The beach has no one, the water is clean, it’s really good. I stopped surfing, because I had to go back to work in Guilin. But then I had a chance to come back to Hainan, and I saw the waves. Oh my gosh, I was so excited. I had no idea China had these kinds of waves, it was so crazy. I decided I wanted to stay and live here, because surfing is just too much fun.

            M: All done.
W: You’re done with your paper? How can that be? I’m just getting started/
M: I’m just a better student than you are.
W: Let me see that. You didn’t write this.
M: No, I didn’t. I downloaded somebody’s paper from some website and slapped my name on it. The professor will never know. Wise up. Do you want me to find one for you?
W: No way! Not only is it cheating, if you get caught, you could not pass the class.
M: Don’t be such a nice person. Everybody does it. I know a guy who pays somebody in another state to write all of his papers for him and another guy who lifts his papers from old books. Don’t tell me you’ve never copied ideas from a source and represented them as your own.
W: I’d rather earn what I get and know that I didn’t cheat myself out of an education!
