Newcomer Norah Jones swept the 45th Annual GRAMMY Awards, taking home five awards at the first ceremony held in New York in five years.
Early in the telecast, Tony Bennett enthused about Jones shortly before she performed "Don't Know Why," which won both Song Of The Year (awarded to songwriter Jesse Harris) and Record Of The Year. "She's not good, she's great! She's phenomenal!" said Bennett. "She's gonna be around a long time, because you, the public, have bought millions of her records!"
The GRAMMY voters concurred, naming Jones Best New Artist, and giving Come Away With Me, the 23-year-old jazz-pop vocalist's debut album, awards for Best Pop Vocal Album and Album Of The Year. Arif Mardin, who co-produced the album, was named Producer Of The Year. Jones appeared nervous during her performance and upon receiving her first two awards. She knocked her GRAMMY against a microphone stand accepting Record Of The Year, and accidentally swore on camera while receiving Best New Artist.
