古 時 我 國 有 樂 妓 ， 不 少 文 人 趨 之 若 鶩 ， 例 如 唐 朝 白 居 易 和 元 稹 都 跟 一 個 叫 做 玲 瓏 的 歌 妓 相 好 ， 元 稹 還 有 詩 叫 白 居 易 “ 休 遣 玲 瓏 唱 我 詩 ” 。 當(dāng) 然 ， 白 居 易 只 要 舍 得 出 錢 ， 要 玲 瓏 唱 甚 么 歌 都 可 以 ， 元 稹 管 不 著 。
    在 西 方 ， 賣 唱 人 也 是 任 顧 客 點(diǎn) 唱 的 ， 所 以 ， 英 國 有 一 句 諺 語 ： He who pays the piper may call the tune（ 誰 付 錢 給 吹 笛 人 ， 誰 就 可 以 點(diǎn) 曲 子 ） 。 這 句 諺 語 ， 現(xiàn) 在 常 常 給 分 做 兩 截 ： 第 一 截 pay the piper， 引 伸 為 “ 負(fù) 擔(dān) 費(fèi) 用 ” 或 “ 承 擔(dān) 責(zé) 任 ” ； 第 二 截 call the tune， 引 伸 為 “ 居 于 命 令 地 位 ” ， 例 如 ：
    She did not take heed of the doctor's advice. Eventually, she had to pay the piper and went down with tuberculosis.（ 她 不 聽 醫(yī) 生 勸 告 ， 最 后 自 食 其 果 ， 染 上 了 肺 癆 病 。 ）
