The article "200 English sentences that you must commit to memory" is ubiquitous on "Learn English" Chinese BBSes. It and its various incarnations sometimes come with sensational--and definitely exaggerated--prefaces such as "These 200 hundred sentences are the creme de la creme of foreign classic compositions", " These are perfect sentences", "These are distilled from hundreds of fine Ielts compositions", and so on. Is that true? The answer is a resounding "NO."
This set is identifiable by the first sentence:
1. According to a recent survey, four million people die each year from diseases linked to smoking.

(Although it is over 45 years ago when I took English composition 101 at first year University, I can still remember some of the rules I was taught, and they run contrary to the style of these sentences.)
I am not the only person who notices the problem in these sentences. Here is another individual who is also sceptical, and decided to show it to people who should know.
