When Henry ford decided to produce his famous v-8 motor, he chose to build an engine with the entire eight cylinders cast in one block, and instructed his engineers to produce a design in one for the engine. The design was placed on paper, but the engineers agreed, to a man, that it was simply impossible to cast an eight-cylinder engine-block in one piece.
Ford said, “Produce it anyway.”
“But,” they replied, “It’s impossible!”
“Go ahead.” Ford commanded, “And stay on the job until you succeed, no matter how much time is required.”
The engineers went ahead. There was nothing else for them to do, if they were to remain on the ford staff. Six months passed and nothing happened. Another six months passed, and still nothing happened. The engineers tried every conceivable plan to carry out the orders, but the thing seemed out of the question:“impossible!”
At the end of the year ford checked with his engineers, and again they informed him they had found no way to carry out his orders.
“go right head,” said ford, “I want it, and I’ll have it.”
They went ahead, and then, as if by a stroke of magic, the secret was discovered.
The ford determination had won once more!

５月２７日下午，南京大學隆重舉行慶功會。載譽歸來的劉欣身著出征國際講壇的淺色淡花旗袍，娓娓追述倫敦奪冠經歷，深深吸引了在場數百生代表，其中不少是金發(fā)碧眼的外籍教師與留學生。
一年一度的國際英語演講比賽，由國際英語聯合會主辦。今年共有２０個國家的３７名選手參加，是歷屆比賽人數多的。來自英語為母語國家的選手，如英國、美國、澳大利亞、奧地利等，占了相當數量。中國參賽的４名選手，分別出自南大、北大、北外、外交學院，是不久前舉辦的“２１世紀杯”全國英語演講比賽的獲勝者中選出來的。就在那次薈萃全國英語教學具實力的２２所大學頂尖高手激烈角逐之中，劉欣以高居榜首的優(yōu)異成績奪得冠軍，取得參加國際英語演講大賽的資格。
此次國際比賽規(guī)定頗為嚴格，要求每位參賽選手自行選定演講題目，作５分鐘自由演講，然后有２分鐘時間回答評委所提出的問題。評委按照“演講內容”、“理解和回答問題的能力”、“演講風格和技能”、“總體效果”等要素進行評分。
“演講內容”無疑是重頭戲，占評比總分４０％。各國選手無不選擇一個個緊扣國際社會的“熱點”選題大下功夫，如恐怖主義影響、艾滋病、安樂死、教育、性別改變等。而劉欣所作的演講選題為《鏡子與我》，更有獨辟蹊徑之妙。她從幼時趴在比自己個頭還高的梳妝臺上照鏡子說起，對祖母所言“為什么我在鏡子里看不到自己？”不明其意，及至長大以后方知祖母是位典型的傳統婦女，大多時間與灶間相伴，家中的事情從來不能作主，幾乎成了一個被遺忘的人，因而發(fā)出如上感嘆。隨之她話鋒一轉，稱道現代的中國婦女發(fā)生了翻天覆地的變化，她們和男人地位平等，在學習、就業(yè)等方面可以有自己的選擇，像祖母那樣“生活中沒有自己”、因而“鏡子中看不到自己”的狀態(tài)已經過去。
劉欣的演講貌似羅列個人生活瑣事。實則折射時代與社會風云，融中國婦女漫長而曲折的命運變遷歷程于一面平平常常的鏡子之中，包含深刻而豐厚的文化內涵。加之她純正、流利的英語表達和高雅、大方的風度顯示，令嚴謹、挑剔的評委頻頻點頭。
提問開始了，頭一個問題就頗為刁鉆：“你一直在說照鏡子，請問在鏡子里我們看見的，到底是我們真實的自己還是僅僅是我們的圖像？”劉欣幾乎不假思索地脫口而出：“這全在于自己，你覺得是什么就是什么！”第二個問題更為尖刻、厲害：“你說舊中國的婦女沒有地位，《紅樓夢》中的賈母不是高高在上嗎？我問你一個具體事情，你外公死后，家里辦喪事時，你舅舅難道一點都不和你外婆商量嗎？”“商量是要商量的，但后的決定權還是在我舅舅手上。”劉欣依然迅捷回答，從容中透露出。
由國際英語聯合會副主席、英國BBC節(jié)目主持人、金融時報撰稿人等權威人士組成的評委團，對劉欣的參賽作出了“這位女選手一出場就吸引人，演講結構完美，表演脫俗，禮儀很好”綜合評價，一致同意授予劉欣一等獎。當這一評比結果當眾宣布，賽場上掌聲雷動。
中國第選派代表參加國際英語演講比賽便取得佳績，令比賽組織者和英國駐華使館為之震動，相繼致電我有關方面，對中國年輕一代英語水平和中國英語教育給予高度評價。消息傳至南京大學，師生們歡欣鼓舞，校領導當即作出給劉欣頒發(fā)６０００元特別獎學金決定，校團委同時授予她五四獎章。

“演講內容”無疑是重頭戲，占評比總分４０％。各國選手無不選擇一個個緊扣國際社會的“熱點”選題大下功夫，如恐怖主義影響、艾滋病、安樂死、教育、性別改變等。而劉欣所作的演講選題為《鏡子與我》，更有獨辟蹊徑之妙。她從幼時趴在比自己個頭還高的梳妝臺上照鏡子說起，對祖母所言“為什么我在鏡子里看不到自己？”不明其意，及至長大以后方知祖母是位典型的傳統婦女，大多時間與灶間相伴，家中的事情從來不能作主，幾乎成了一個被遺忘的人，因而發(fā)出如上感嘆。隨之她話鋒一轉，稱道現代的中國婦女發(fā)生了翻天覆地的變化，她們和男人地位平等，在學習、就業(yè)等方面可以有自己的選擇，像祖母那樣“生活中沒有自己”、因而“鏡子中看不到自己”的狀態(tài)已經過去。
劉欣的演講貌似羅列個人生活瑣事。實則折射時代與社會風云，融中國婦女漫長而曲折的命運變遷歷程于一面平平常常的鏡子之中，包含深刻而豐厚的文化內涵。加之她純正、流利的英語表達和高雅、大方的風度顯示，令嚴謹、挑剔的評委頻頻點頭。
提問開始了，頭一個問題就頗為刁鉆：“你一直在說照鏡子，請問在鏡子里我們看見的，到底是我們真實的自己還是僅僅是我們的圖像？”劉欣幾乎不假思索地脫口而出：“這全在于自己，你覺得是什么就是什么！”第二個問題更為尖刻、厲害：“你說舊中國的婦女沒有地位，《紅樓夢》中的賈母不是高高在上嗎？我問你一個具體事情，你外公死后，家里辦喪事時，你舅舅難道一點都不和你外婆商量嗎？”“商量是要商量的，但后的決定權還是在我舅舅手上。”劉欣依然迅捷回答，從容中透露出。
由國際英語聯合會副主席、英國BBC節(jié)目主持人、金融時報撰稿人等權威人士組成的評委團，對劉欣的參賽作出了“這位女選手一出場就吸引人，演講結構完美，表演脫俗，禮儀很好”綜合評價，一致同意授予劉欣一等獎。當這一評比結果當眾宣布，賽場上掌聲雷動。
中國第選派代表參加國際英語演講比賽便取得佳績，令比賽組織者和英國駐華使館為之震動，相繼致電我有關方面，對中國年輕一代英語水平和中國英語教育給予高度評價。消息傳至南京大學，師生們歡欣鼓舞，校領導當即作出給劉欣頒發(fā)６０００元特別獎學金決定，校團委同時授予她五四獎章。
從全國大學生英語演講比賽脫穎而出，到國際英語演講比賽一舉奪魁，劉欣說成功全在于實力。這實力來源于她的刻苦自勵。從初中進入鎮(zhèn)江一中開始學習英語就很心，考取南大英語專業(yè)后更為努力，參加課外英語演講、戲劇演出，主動接觸外籍教師，堅持與兩位姐姐用英語通信，利用一切機會置身于英語環(huán)境之中。為準備比賽，她廢寢忘食，放棄寒假與親人團聚，關在宿舍寫講稿、練口語，在玻璃窗上自我書寫“新年好”，排解獨寂。這實力也源于真誠相助。外國語學院劉海平院長、英語系王守仁主任不厭其煩地次指教、輔導，同宿舍的女友主動承擔各種事物，讓她騰出更多時間“備賽”。甚至連匆忙中忘了帶的出國護照，也是同學在火車上站了２０小時趕送北京的。
