清朝末期，雕刻精美、描繪華麗的折扇大量在中國(guó)廣東生產(chǎn)，后被西方商人青睞。運(yùn)往歐洲和美國(guó)后成為西方貴婦的重要時(shí)尚配件(accessories)。中國(guó)折扇的材質(zhì)多為鏤雕精巧的象牙、珍珠貝殼、漆木(lacquer)。扇面上描繪了眾多清朝官員及夫人的形象。因?yàn)榫哂猩衩氐臇|方情調(diào)，當(dāng)時(shí)西方中上層貴婦人手一把，以此來炫耀自己的財(cái)富和高貴。
