An international applicant is a student who holds or expects to hold a student, exchange, visitor or diplomatic visa and who wishes to attend school in the United States.
    　　As an international student, you can apply as a freshman or a transfer student and you must meet the University of California subject requirements at the freshman or transfer level. You are considered a freshman applicant if you have completed secondary school and have not enrolled at any college or university. You are considered a transfer applicant if you have completed secondary school and enrolled in a college or university.

    　　As one of the top research universities in the world, UC Santa Barbara's international reputation means admission is competitive. The Office of Admissions is familiar with educational systems around the world, and will provide each applicant with a comprehensive review. To be considered competitive for admission, your grades and exam scores must be excellent. The credentials of an international undergraduate applicant are evaluated in accordance with the general regulations governing admission.

    　1.Curriculum Requirements

    　　If you are following the IGCSE/GCSE/GCE curriculum, you must do the following to be eligible for admission:
    　　Complete at least 5 IGCSE/GCSE/GCE O-Levels, and at least 3 academic GCE A-Level exams
    　　If your school offers both H1 and H2 A-Level exams, UC will only consider H2 A-Level exams.
    　　If you are following the Chinese national curriculum, follow these instructions for the application:
    　　List all courses and marks, from grade 9 (year 3 of lower middle school) through grade 12 (years 1 through 3 of upper middle school) exactly as they appear on your official academic records.
    　　Be prepared to submit your Graduation Certificate from the upper middle school if you are accepted to UC.
    　Hong Kong
    　　Submitting official documents (after you are admitted to UC)
    　　If you attended a local secondary school that offers the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) curriculum and you are accepted to UC, you must submit the HKDSE to the UC campus where you plan to enroll. The HKDSE must be postmarked on or before July 1.
    　　If you attended a school that does not offer the HKDSE curriculum, please refer to the list on this page and look for the education system your school offers.
    　　2.Examination Requirement
    　　All applicants must submit scores from the ACT Assessment plus Writing or the SAT Reasoning Test.
    　　UC no longer requires SAT subject tests, but certain programs on some campuses recommend them and you can use subject tests to satisfy the "a-g" requirements listed above. Specifically, at UCSB the College of Creative Studies recommends a SAT subject test related to an applicant’s chosen major. The College of Engineering recommends that all applicants take the Math 2 subject test.
    　　UCSB Supplemental Applications
    　　Certain departments at UC Santa Barbara require a supplemental application in addition to the University of California application, in which you select UCSB as a campus of choice.
    　　College of Creative Studies
    　　Applicants to the College of Creative Studies must submit an additional application and supplementary materials directly to the College. Although no additional fee is required to apply, admission to the College of Creative Studies is contingent upon receiving an admission offer from UCSB. Students may also apply to the college once admitted to UCSB.

    　3.English Language Proficiency
    
    　　Applicants whose native language is not English, and whose high school, college or university education was in a country where the language of instruction was not English, must provide evidence of English proficiency to be successful in university studies.
    　　Proficiency in English may be demonstrated by taking the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The minimum accepted score for admission consideration for the TOEFL is 80 or better on the Internet-based test and 550 or better on the paper-based test.
    　　Proficiency may also be demonstrated with the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam. The minimum accepted score for the IELTS is 6.5 or better band score (academic modules).
    　　For admission selection, a UC campus may require a score higher than the minimum.
    　　To be considered for admission, the TOEFL or IELTS Exam must be taken by the December test date prior to enrollment. Test results must be sent directly from the testing agency.
    　4.Students with Mixed Records
    　　Students who have had less than three years of instruction in English will need to demonstrate English proficiency. This can be done in any of the following ways:
    　　Score 24 or higher on the combined ACT English/Writing or English Language Arts.
    　　Score 560 or higher on the Writing section of the SAT Reasoning test or a score of 31 or higher on Writing and Language in the SAT with Essay (new SAT).
    　　Score 3, 4 or 5 on the AP examination in English Language and Composition, or English Literature and Composition.
    　　Score 6 or 7 on the IB Standard Level examination in English: Literature, or Language and Literature.
    　　Score 5, 6 or 7 on the IB Higher Level examination in English: Literature, or Language and Literature.
    　　Score 80 or higher on the Internet-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or a score of 550 on the paper-based test.
    　　Score 6.5 or higher on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
    　　Any one of these examinations must be completed by December of the final year of high school/secondary school, and official scores must be submitted by the following January.

    　International Freshman Selection
    
    　　The University of California use a comprehensive review process when evaluating each freshman applicant. The Office of Admissions at UC Santa Barbara will use a variety of academic as well as non-academic factors when considering a student’s accomplishments. Academic and extracurricular achievements are viewed in light of the opportunities available to each student and the student's demonstrated capacity to contribute to the intellectual life at UCSB.
    　　UC Santa Barbara uses the following breakdown when evaluating international freshman applicants:
    　　Minimum Eligibility vs. Selection
    　　While attaining minimum eligibility is an important first step in gaining admission to the University, minimum eligibility does not assure admission to your first choice campus. When UCSB cannot admit all eligible applicants, as has been the case among many UC campuses in recent years, we use standards to select students that are more competitive than the minimum requirements. These standards, which the university calls selection criteria, identify students who have demonstrated the capacity for high academic achievement and promise, and who have a variety of other qualities that can contribute to the strength and diversity of the campus community.

    　Evaluation by College
    　　UCSB College of Letters and Science
    　　Choice of major is not considered in selection to the College of Letters and Science. The exceptions to this rule are dance and music performance majors. Both majors require applicants to complete an audition in late January or early February.
    　　UCSB Engineering
    　　Students are selected by major for all engineering and computer science majors. Only applicants with a solid background in advanced high school mathematics will be considered for admission to engineering. This includes high grades in all math courses through grade 11 and enrollment in pre-calculus or higher in grade 12. A student not selected for their first choice major will be reviewed for admission to an alternate major outside of the College of Engineering if one was selected.
    　UCSB College of Creative Studies
    　　Applicants to the College of Creative Studies submit a supplementary application in addition to the general UC Application, which is reviewed by Creative Studies faculty. Students are selected within Creative Studies majors only. Applicants not selected for Creative Studies will automatically be considered for admission to the College of Letters and Science.
